Refresco France front runner in sustainability

Published on Monday 12 07 2010 at 9:38

This week a new, unique waste water treatment project has started in St. Donat at one of the three production plants of Refresco France. With the help of bamboo trees, water that is being used for the production of soft drinks and beverages can be treated to give back to nature.

The project consists of growing bamboo trees on a field, next to the production plant, that is protected by a concrete container on a podium, to avoid the bamboo to grow outside the field. After only twelf months the bamboo reaches already eight meters of height. The water that is being used in the production for cooling and rinsing of the bottles and lines is sprayed over the trees. The trees filter the water, take out any organic substances, rebalance the Ph-value and absorb the CO2 . In fact they treat the water so it is suitable for reuse in nature. The water then floats back to into the soil and to the river. In 2012 the bamboo has grown to the maximum and it needs to be cut. The bamboo wood is then being reused to heat boilers and burn the CO2.
